{"id":61,"date":"2009-03-19T12:02:37","date_gmt":"2009-03-19T19:02:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.asinglelion.com\/lionspeak\/?p=61"},"modified":"2009-03-19T12:02:37","modified_gmt":"2009-03-19T19:02:37","slug":"aig-astroturffing-indignation-by-government","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.asinglelion.com\/lionspeak\/?p=61","title":{"rendered":"AIG  = Astroturffing Indignation by Government"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">Of course we now all head about the AIG scandal and how the press in America has twisted this way out of proportion. <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>Now comes out that Obama administration and Congress knew about the retention bonuses for months, and Chris Dodd inserted the language in the Stimulus bill. <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>This is nothing more <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>than political posturing. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">If AIG has to return the bonuses, the executives should do a John Gault, quit in mass, and sue the government for breach of contact. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">As for the CEO misdoings, for the last seven year or more there is one central connection and catalyst for CEO misdeeds: government regulation starting with the limitation of deductibility of CEO salaries which in turn causing companies to turn to bonuses, stock options and other forms that in the past has lead to the temptation of corruption. The simple solution is let company pay their CEOs like the rest of us: in cash. . The second issue is anti hostile takeover regulations of the 1980\u2019s. The unintentional effect was to take the only weapon stockholders had to hold, boards of directors, officers and CEO\u2019s accountable. If stock holders felt that the company was underperforming, they could vote their shares to a white knight that would fire and replace the directors and the CEO. <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA;\">Government should never been in the business of running or bailing out private business.
