Christmas 2010

I got the tree up a little early this year because I will be head home on the 24th.
other thing in may life is I got a two moth temp job starting in January, unlike other thias one id a direct temporary position and my lead to more work. Because of a bump in unemployment, I will be able to attend mewcon , a cross genre fan convention (SF anime and a bit of furry) over the New Years Holiday in Portland Oregon. This year there will be three furry panels.

On the subject cross genres fan conventions, I want to bring up is cross genre conventions and other fan conventions that are fur friendly. Here in Northwest we have a new one call MewCon. In addition, I think Radcon in the Tri Cities WA are fur friendly and furry panels pop up at RustyCon (SF) and sakura con (anime). I see this a great opportunity for furs to look beyond the fur con to be with other furs, preset the furry fandom to other fan communities and to expand ones geek horizons beyond furry.

Uniquness of Furry Fandom or Why no Na’Vi Fursuits

One person on furtopia started a discussion about why there wan not many Avatar fursuits, my answer as follows:

I had seen pictures of Na’Vi costumes in other conventions like Comic Con. I would not expect many Avatar fursonas in the fandom for the reason there no Waking green fur Huskies in Hollywood or anime. 99% of furries look inward to themselves and other furs for their inspiration compare to Anime and Science fiction fans look to outside of themselves for inspiration for example Avatar, Star wars, Firefly, Naruto, etc.. As Uncle Kage puts it, we are fans of our own creation. . Take Kumoricon a local Oregon Anime convention; there were two costumers to every attendee but 99% are cosplaying an established anime character. (ps. you think model nazis are bad, meet a cosplayers they will tear into anybody’s who charter portrayal is not perfect.). Hetalia Axis Powers was the in thing and seen multiple cosplayers portraying the same charters.

Now take any fury convention. We may have 10 to hundreds fursuiting but 99% unique individual variations of characters. It will be very hard to find two of the same fursuit or artwork. This is not to say one will not run into a Stitch, Bolt, or a Br’er Fox at a fur con, but they are just one in a sea of many different creations. This variations and uniqueness in fursuiting, literature, and art is what drew me to the furry fandom

Furry Christians and This World.

Recently I was talking to a fur who wants to have a ministry to furries. I do not have a good feeling about this because he seem like many revivalist minded Christians, his ministry will devolve into law as in proclaiming one needs to be “saved” out of furry fandom rather than proclaiming the Gospel of Christ dying for our sins and resurrected for our salvation. Fred Phelps is more extreme form of the error of substituting law in place of the Gospel.
This discussion got me thinking about our relations hip in regards to the world we live in.
I turn to 1 Corinthians 5. After Paul remands the church for tolerating sexual immorality bay a member 1 Cor 5:1-8 he says the following:

9I have written you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people—10not at all meaning the people of this world who are immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world. 11But now I am writing you that you must not associate with anyone who calls himself a brother but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or a slanderer, a drunkard or a swindler. With such a man do not even eat.
12What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside? 13God will judge those outside. “Expel the wicked man from among you.”

As applied, it is OK to associate with furries who of this world in our daily lives or even with furry fandom. We who are in Christ should not associate with any furry who claims to be a brother or sister in Christ and unrepentantly acts and promotes others to act in immoral fashion.

I do allow for the idea of a weaker bother to abstain from the fandom if it to temptation but this cannot be used a blanket command to all Christians who have interest in furry fandom or whether to attend Fury convention. Another thing I notice is verse 12 and 13, it not our job to judge those out side the church. The world had been judge by God. I see In other words, It not our job to go on anti Yiff crusades on Fur Affinity but preach the Christ died for our sin (The Gospel)

Why Fetish Expression in the Fandom

On another board, a fur a asked why those who engage in fetish behavior need to talk publicly about them.
The reason is a common thread within elements of LGBT and fetish subculture: this element or trait is exhibitionism. This minority in the Furry fandom not only expresses and identify themselves sexually, but the need to do so publicly and demand pubic approval. In some cases the need to shock, provoke, and offend others. I see a lot of this in gay culture. It is interesting a post asked same questions about Gay Pride celebrations brought up a similar issue.  Add to this a furry subculture that does not have very much in the way of structure compare to Anime and Science Fiction fandom, conventions, and culture. For example, both have restrictions and rules when and where adult behavior is appropriate. Exhibitionists are a small minority in any subculture but often the loudest.

I do not see this as part of the furry fandom, but how outside influences came into the fandom. In recent time, some are addressing this issue.

Getting My But Handed To Me On A Silver Platter.

The opinions expressed here are the views of the writer (Action) and do not necessarily reflect the views of the furry community especially PDX Furs nor posting of my opinion does not in any way enter a convenient relationship with the furry community.

In other words do lay this “why you are causing drama in the furry community” line on me. I am not you and you are not me. In addition, I never recalled joining your idea of community and have to sway over my life. Finally, you do not have to read what I am posting below the cut.
