Furry Update

I still looking for work it had been a quiet two weeks and no job yet. I admit I made a few mistakes like not sticking with one firm for a contact. I also am dealing with a medical issue so I need to hold on to what money I have. As a result I am unable to attend All Fur Fun this year. There is a slight chance if I can drum up enough eBay business.

The last few Furmeets were a pleasure. We here in Portland Oregon have a two furmeets an indoor one at Pioneer Place mall on the last Saturday of the month and a outdoor one when the weather is good on the second Sunday. The 28 March meet was interesting.  Kumoricon, the Portland Anime convention was using cosplayers for a promotion and they took up a part of the food court. For once we were not the weird dressed ones at the food court ;).  Then again all we need was a few Star Wars types and we could have a little geek convention.

Please do keep me in your prayers, I can hope the doctors can find out what wrong with me.

Of Furries and Furverts.

Recently I found a post on 2  the Ranting Gryphon’s Live Journal   about Michael Cogliantry soon to be released book Furverts, the secret life of furries. I do agree with some of his points that we have nobody else to blame but out selves, but there is more to the subject at hand: how furry fandom reflects a post Christian/Modern era

Fist let me deal with Mr. Michael Cogliantr. Furverts is nothing more that repackaging and recycling his earlier work Furry Kama Sutra. The videos have been around since 2006 and he displayed his work in 2008. I guess the art show circuit is not bringing in the bucks so he recycles his trash.

Now back to the point being how furry fandom’s desire to be inclusive is a fine example of an observation I see, furry fandom is a case of art initiating reality The fury culture is a microcosm of a post Christian or post modern philosophy especially when it comes to morality. In a post modem culture, morality is a personal choice including how one publicly displays one’s choice; furthermore, there are no absolutes.  For example it doesn’t take long in a discussion on cleaning up furry fandom until somebody will post “no, do not force your morality on me” line. Another example was the hostility and criticism over Megaplex attempt to impose a PG13 standard. It also doesn’t help that the vast majority of furries were born after 1980 and are the generation raised and taught on a steady diet of relativism.

The problem I have with this openness and the criticism of any moral standard in the fandom is it will eventually drive furry fandom to obscurity.  More troubling is how non furry related, sexual fetishes like BDSM and balloon fetish are finding avenues in furry fandom. The tragedy is a small minority will deprive the majority of the richness of furry fandom as society and business will not lend support, good press, or even convention space.

If the fandom is to survive it will not be in the  obscure niche of sexual fetishes but opening up to mainstream public, this include bringing in families and older adults. I would love to see furry become like science fiction where I see fans from young children to senior citizens.

Welcome and Speaking my Piece

This is the last I going to touch this subject but now I am on my own blog I can speak my piece.

Fist of all welcome to my new home, Unlike Live Journal it is my paid for server so there are no banner ads or popups to worry about.

What brought this on was the realization I while I am a furry I simple can not be part of the furry subculture. Rest a sure I am not going to go off like Burnt Furs or try to start another fandom.

What set me was a post I could have handled better. I made a comment concerning  my displeasure of a person portrayal of Sara Palin. Now I seen the video on YouTube ,I can say the performance about paranoid about Russians pissing in her compost pile and unable to find Africa(1) smacks of the same  post election smears.  My mistake is I forgot the rule I learn from Pager seek clarity rather than agreement and leave at that. I took too far and made it too personal and provoked unto wrath. She feels her portrayal was just done in fun and was invited to do an encore at FC and I see it as libral politics of destruction as usual, Clarity no agreement. Well UT Tiger rightfully chastised me for casing unnecessary drama in the community.  Then it hit me, “what in god’s name am I doing here, I do not need no stinkin community”

Let face it, the recent Furry surveys says it all  Bi and Homosexual are 22.1% and 35.2% respectfully, age round 15 to 24, and according to the Davis studies only 15%  are conservative; there is little room for a 48 year Right of center, Christian heterosexual. So in clear Introvert fashion, I am doing my own thing. There are good signs people across the spectrum are waking up and realize we need to clean this up a little and there is Phill Geusz Down the Rabbit Hole column.

There is hope.

I was wrong I am a loner

As thought about after the Good Friday service and an order of fish and chips it I realized my problem. I was trying to live a dual life to the point I was approaching a mental breakdown. I am one who lives in and other subculture one of Loners, not those who stereotypical wish to harm others to who dedicated to a life of solitude. It why for example I am 48 and never married, I simply can not function with others except possibly another loner. A good book (while I do not agree with everything) that explains what makes me tick is A Party of One by Anneli Rufus You can read about it here http://www.annelirufus.com/partyofone/

The problem is my Loner tendencies are direct conflict with the communal nature of a furry fandom and social networking. In an allegorical way, I have a Black Bear inside me, when I am confronted I do not agree with, I turn around and isolate myself rather than confront. I only confront if it intrude on my life. It why I am I can Function as a Hello Kitty Fan and A Science fiction fan

In the end I will be making some changes. Acton is not longer the Republican Black Bear But now Acton the Hermit. It will be more reflective on my real life. I will soon move from a live journal to a word press blog on my own server. Here that hard part effective immediately I will be defrending most of you all. Please do not take it seriously, but unless you have something I am interested in or an interesting personality. I also must confess social networking conflict with my lifestyle. I do not make friends in quantity. This not to say I would not like to meet you at a fur meet or a con I just need my space.

Maybe I am not a Furry

The last bit was fun but there is a serous side. I am a bit sensitive on my Politics and Religion. If something that bothers me to where I feel my right of center politics and religion are attacked, my tendency is to shy away especially when they are alternatives. I guess what started was a few furs liberal rants, 2 The Ranting Gryphon, Uncle Kage, Funday Pawpet Show, Furs for Obama, Bill Hook a la Kevin and Kell, some furs on furtopia. (No on furtopia but your live journals ), pro gay marriage, yiff or this guy http://anthrozine.com/clmn/clm.geusz.15.html.
The thing is I am torn is I met some good furs too.

At the same time Try to find politics:

and

http://forumus.sanriotown.com/scripts/mb2/mb2.cgi?rm=main

There is none The no Hello Kitty for Obama or Bush Bashing, bashing of religious right under the guise of Sanrio fandom, in fact I say the same for Science Fiction and Anime fandom. Why all the politics in furry fandom.
I was originally go to say goodbye but I decide to stick around I might be lees incline to be active in the fandom. More money for Hello Kitty stuff.
If you are going to go politcs be nice or leave the fandom out of it.
