Con Report Rose City Comic Con

The Con:  Rose City Comic Con

The Place:  Oregon Convention Center

The Dates:  21 -22 September 2013

Rose City Comic con bills itself as the Largest Pop Icon and comic convention Oregon. Both of my Hello Kitty plushies were my companions.

Saturday:  I got to the convention site around 11:00am. The line  was not  very long and I spent the time checkout the exhibitor’s  hall  and taking pictures  until 12:00 when  I  attended the Chris  Judge (from Stargate ) panel.  It was my time  at a big Comic con style panned, Chris  was ok but I was bother that  he wanted to up things  to a R rated panel but had to restrain himself to a few off color jokes.   The rest of the time I drifted around the exhibitor’s hall especially the old school video games including Altair Star wars with its glorious vector graphics. I attended the Kiju and Hollywood to Comic panel which was very informative.  I went out to dinner and came back for the costume contest and after party. I love the two costumes form the move 9 and the two Cosplay families, mother father, and the kids in costume.

Sunday:  I headed back to convention after Church and lunch.  I attend the Drawing Comics with Randy Emberlin and latter Animated with Tom Cook, John DiMaggio and Billy West having a dialog using voices from various shows, for example Adventure time Jake the Dog vs.  DR.  Zoiberg  . This was the highlight for the con for me.  The rest of the time I just hung around the convention.

The Good:  It was a convention, the old school arcade

The Bad: Not really bad, but I  go to most of the local  fan conventions and used to smaller intimate  cons and panels , not to big celebrity panels. I was a bit turned off by the comic con experience, having very little interest in comics and high priced autograph and photo prices.

The Ugly: Nothing

I want to commend Rose City Comicon for its phenomenal growth for a second year convention, and bringing an affordable comic con experience to Portland, probably push by the competition with the juggernaut Wizzards world.   Yet I have a feeling that Rose City comic Con will lose its local flavor and become just another big production Comic Con with distant celebrities with high cost if one wants a picture and autograph.  It has two areas that do not have a draw in my geek life, Hollywood celebrity worship and comics. I even cause me to think about do I really want to go to San Diego Comic Con.  Rose city Comic con reminds me of the importance of local Geek and Fan conventions like Wonder Northwest, Kumoricon, Furlandia, and Newcon.
