Doing Jobs Americans Will Not

What is going on here?  A Brewster Washington farmer is flying in 300 Jamaican farm workers to pick crops. The issue started during an INS paper check forcing the farmer to let go hundreds of Mexican workers. Conservative statist commentators were dancing in the street that now the farmer forced against his property rights, has to hire real American workers at around $11.00 dollars an hour plus room and board and transportation, not a bad deal for an unemployed native worker.  The farmer tired and the result was no takers. Needing to find workers, he had to look elsewhere.  I do not blame the farmer, he played by the rules.

These incidents speak volumes in what wrong in America. First there the anti immigration fallacy get rid of the Mexicans and American will do the jobs. There are two wrongs on this front; in good times, Americans can be fussy. Why work in the hot field when one can work retail for less when the place is air condition and get an employee discount. Second with things are tough with high unemployment, one thinks Americans would be banging down the doors, not so fast. Unlike the poor Jamaican who ether has to work or die, the American can sit around send 200 resumes to employers who are not hiring thanks to our generous unemployment system. Unemployment payouts are a clear disincentive to American supporting themselves by temporary seasonal work.

Still more populist stupidity; “why not raise wages?” the problem is a farming subsist on razor thin profit margins. There a definite level a farm can pay in wages before it cheaper just to let the crops rot or throw in the towel and sell out to a developer.

There are no simplistic answers, putting up roadblock to immigration or pushing disincentives to work via the welfare system are not the answer.

On a side note, this issue angers me to no end over lazy unemployed Americans. I am putting my money where my mouth is and waking the walk. I am doing a $11.00 a hour six day gig. I consider farm work until this gig came up.
