21 October 2015

21 October 2015 I am writing this on my PC and will post this on my face book and Word press blog via a 56000000 bit cable modem connection and will read any replies on my Windows tablet via 4g / Wi-Fi hotspot, all never predicted in Back to the Future II. Sadly I will not be watching Jaws 19, fly in a car or visit and 80’s café. Even though the Cubs have a chance at the World series.
Recently I was listening to SFF audio podcast of Robert Bloth, written in 1958 dealing with over population and some time ago watching Gerry Anderson’s Thunderbirds are Go and now going though Space 1999. I amused by how the writer in the past thought of the future. I also looked back to my late childhood as one born in 1960. I remember being ether we be zip along in care at 150mph wearing unisex clothing or chocking on pollution in a overcrowded world. Neither can to be real in 2015. This leads me to a principle I hold looking at speculative fiction: that predictions of the future are written through the lens of the writers present. There are only a few science fiction writers who can write about the future without falling back to the world of their present, therefore we have stories about computer big as a living room with lots of buttons in the year 2000.

Well enough ranting for the day Happy Back to the Future Day and I send a copy of this post from a pubic fax booth, while eating rehydrated pizza hut pizza.
