Kumoircon Con Report

The Con Kumoircon

The Place: Hilton and Red Lion Hotel Vancover Washington

The Dates 1st though 3rd September 2012

Komoroicon is a Oregon / SW Washington Anime convention, celebration its 10th anniversary. This is my fifth year attending.  My new big Hello Kitty plush accompanied me.

Friday Saturday:

I check in my badge Friday, unlike last year there were no pre-con events. I skipped out of the panelist meeting, and had my glitch with the Opening Ceremony. The room was filled to capacity and I only got in when a few seat opened up.  They had us line up outside the hotel but did the count at the door. The staff should had done a count of the line and station the maid’s squad to mark the cutoff point instead of waiting in line just to learn they are not getting in.  After Opening Ceremony I attended most of the Funamtion Industry panel then try to go the My Little Brony panel, to only find out it was packed. Gasping for air I left and took pictures. Noting an issue number of people I arranged for a last minute mike for my Otaku over 25 panel. I attended the Cosplaying parents before heading off to AMV show and contest.

At 8:00pm I did my Otaku over 25. Last year I had 35 attendees this year I had more than 50. I put in a solid performance but I could have done better. On problem was I realize I need to do all the work rather than posting on line for suggestions. I walked around the con area after dinner, darting in and out of the video rooms before heading home.

Two Weekends Two Cons and One More to Go.

I was a busy bear this weekend and the Labor day weekend.  During the Labor Day weekend, I attended Kumoricon the three day Anime convention in Vancover Washington. The next weekend I attended   Rose City Comic Con.   The group for  Rose City Comic Con want to bring a San Diego Comic Con style convention to Portland  As far as attendance, they’re on  very  good footing.  I took my big Kitty to both and took some pictures. I will share a few. My con report will be coming soon.

Next is to prepare for Rainfurrest.

Northern California Volleyball Association has to share Boohoo

Northern California Volleyball Association can get any respect. This time around they have to share space with HempCon 2012, San Jose’s medical marijuana. Now I can understand not wanting break bread with a bunch of pot heads. (That my feeling about medical marijuana outside established clinical uses think medical clinic and hospital under strict control). What caught my attention is their distain and ignorance of furry fandom “

“This weekend stirred up uncomfortable memories for Skov of the most recent Northern California Volleyball Association tournament at the convention center in January. The place was overrun with “furries” — people who dress in animal costumes — at FurCon. “First we had the fuzzy people, now we have HempCon,” Skov said. “Come on, San Jose! What’s happening?””

“The same thing happened in January when the NCVA learned it would share the convention center with FurCon. “Some of the other parents told me they had checked into it and found things that made it out to be basically a porn fetish convention,” said D’Aquino, who conceded his knowledge of furries is based on an episode of television’s “CSI.””

There two problems I have, unwillingness for the Volleyball group to share and a hideous mischaracterization of furries.  Frankly if Volleyball group doesn’t like it they can go elsewhere.  The so call adults in the group can find a few university campuses  play in.  Unlike  pot con Having a furry con next-door   is no difference in sexuality as would be an  Anime convention instead and illegal drug uses is not tolerated at both furry and anime convention   Now aside for Mr.  D’Aquino’ s demonstration his inability to tell reality for TV,  there another kicker.  Middle and High school students   are growing demographic in the furry fandom.  I been seeing more 13 to 17 year olds students are joining Furtopia, an all ages G rated furry community.  Therefore it conceivable some of your players and siblings are furies.

.  Giving the choice HempCon or Further Confusion, I say you daughter Mr.  D’Aquino is safer at a fur con. In addition I think Confusion my want to give San Jose the heave ho and find more fur friendly waters just like Athocon and Pittsburg.

Con Report: Wonder Northwest

Con Report: Wonder Northwest

The Place Crown Plaza Hotel Portland Oregon

The Dates: 26 to 27 Mar 2012

Wonder Northwest is a multi-genre pop culture and anything geeky convention. Wonder Northwest is in its second year the second year and my first time I attended both days. While the con offers not much in the way of panels and events, still for the price it allows for a nice distraction.

Saturday: After going out for breakfast I went to the con site and picked up my badge. This you I took my big Chococat plush to the con. I attended Nerdfight live a panel of podcast who took on all geeky challengers’ questions. Next up I caught some parts of the Micromini Geek film festival, a film festival of local shorts and documentaries of SF, and other genre.  The rest of the time I ran around the dealers den or took pictures. I had to leave early for a friend ordination to the Priesthood, so I called it a day.

Sunday: I rushed over tot eh con hotel after church to catch the last part of the Kaijucast  a Godzillia podcast. Next and PDX Yar, the pirate group, instead of just telling   us about pirate life in the 17th century, PDX Yar employed  role play by splitting the audience into six  groups representing six functions of a pirate ship and compressing a three month voyage into a 45 minute  one of the more interesting panels I attended. The rest of the time I practice my photograph. I went out for dinner and return to catch the Slats and Asian influenced indie band’s first set. I was disappointed the concert was sparsely attended.

The Good: a inexpensive diversion over the Memorial Day weekend, better than going the Indian Casino.  Pdx Yar

The bad :  Not really bad, but I wanted more, more panels more events more geek film festival.

The sparsely attend consort on Sunday, the Band were knocking themselves out; perhaps there need to be more promotion of it as a dead dog party or only on Saturday

Over all I felt Northwest Wonder was a good and well run convention I hope it can grow in the future.

Con Season starts with Wonder Northwest

Wonder Northwest is a Multi Genre convention in Portland Oregon. There not much many panels  so it more of a relax-a-con. Still at $15,00 for the entire weekend, its a deal.

I was taking pictures of the costumers with my Chococcat plush, when I say her with the Red wig and bow, I knew My Hello Kitty Build-A-Bear is of a match. I am very happy with this photo.

My big Chococat drinking up with members of PDXyar a pirate group out of Portland.

Next will be Kumoricon (anime) Steam con (steam punk) Rainfurrest (Furry) and Orycon (SF)
