A Mild Rebuke and Rebuttal

A good online friend had posted about difference between Furry, Anime and Science Fiction Fandom called The difference between Furry vs the Sci-Fi and Anime fandoms.. Bothered by his reply I offered a mild rebuke. Instead of posting it you can read it at his site.
This got me thinking about who I am. I said something that I need to ponder on, that I am more of a furry in the Science Fiction fandom that a furry in the furry fandom. Perhaps my feelings is due to my increasing listening to Science Fiction Podcast like Escape Pod and Starship Sofa and recent falling out and ending the PDX fur meets or with limited funds I am involving myself in the local con seen where I rather attending Radcon, Orycon or Rusty Con that allocate for a far off furry convention. More later
(my reply to him as follows)

“From what I’ve seen at their cons and experienced online, the Sci-Fi and Anime fandoms completely worship what comes out of Hollywood and Tokyo. And any fan who tries to create something that deviates even a fraction from what the author or studios created (like a furry version of Harry Potter) will usually get “dissed” by the hardcore fans for being blasphemous. “

You are correct about one thing about we are fans of our own creation. This is creative force makes furry interesting. Still I have to offer an rebuttal to your narrow view of Science Fiction and Anime fandom. I have to admit I am more of a Furry in the Science Fiction fandom than a furry in the fury fandom. First Science Fiction is at heart a Literary fandom, a fandom that has a rich history in art and literature going back a century and longer. While there are some good furry writers, I enjoy like Phil Geusz, Anthropomorphic Dreams, or the Outcast podcast novels, there a fare more diversity of content in the Anime and Science Fiction fandoms. There are some good up and coming fury writes and far better than the homoerotic of Kevin Gold but there no one yet at the level of some of my favorites in Science Fiction like Nancy Kress, Harry Turtledove, and Allen Steele. Furry art is just dim candle compared to Science Fiction Art.

As for conventions I enjoy the energy of a furry convention but enjoy more a Science Fiction convention like Orycon were I can see diverse fans from six to sixty and have an intelligent conversation with a fan my own age. If I fault a furry con, it is the sameness of them all , exhibit one you Photo collection Wild Bill; all I see is another fursuiter, anther rave and another parade with the same furs from another convention. You collection makes me want to take camera and capture a fursuiter-free photo shoot just to capture the other aspects of the fandom. (Do not take it personally just some constructive criticism)

After all I said still I enjoy the freedom of creation on the fandom even though there a lot of negative aspects such as porn. Yes, one huge advantage is as our own creators We are not restricted in our creativity as in Anime Cosplay or Star Trek fandoms. We do not see the cascade of criticism if one cosplay is not right or no Star Trek mantra of how some fan content is not cannon.
Even with all it problems and my criticism of furry fandom, I still am proud to be a furry and proud wear my tail at any fan convention. It is my hope with all this creativity we furries should go beyond the fur con; we should move back to SF and take furry fandom beyond.
AS a part gift, if you think Science fiction is just out of Hollywood:

Con Report: MEWcon 31 Dec 2010 – 2 Jan 2011

Mew Con Convention Report
The Convention: MEWCon
The Place: Sheraton: Portland Airport Hotel, Portland Oregon.
The Dates: 31 Dec 2010- 2 Jan 2011

MEWCon or Manga and Exotic Worlds convention is a cross genre convention; unlike other fan cons, MEWCon does not focus on one fandom but a mixture of Science Fiction, Fantasy, Anime and even a touch of Furry. Like Kumoricon and Orycon, my Big Chococat made the rounds.

Hey Furries the Water Is Fine Going Beyon the Fur Con

I was at MewCon a cross genre during the New Years day Weekend. I had a great time; like many conventions, I spent the time meeting new people and going to panels and just sucking in the energy at fan conventions. What made it sweet was there were a few furry panels.

Still I was disappointed while Portland has 100 or more furs but only I and three local furs showed up at MewCon . I guess there are many reason. Perhaps the reason is bad treatment of the furry fandom by others. Other reason is furries, in my opinion’ live in a bubble in that even if a cross genre convention with a furry panel, if it not furry, they are not going. Finally, there simply no interested in what other conventions have to offer.

Still I want to encourage you all to put aside past bad experiences and look into attending you local Science fiction, Anime, or Cross Genre (mixture SF, Anime and what not) cons as a fur for three reasons.

Local conventions are a great way to have the fan convention experience on the cheap especially when one cannot afford go or the nearest fur con is far away. Going to fur con is quite expensive when I have to add the cost of travel, hotel, and food. Because of my unemployed situation until recently, there was no way I could attend Rainfurrest, yet I was doing odd computer jobs and was able to set aside money to attend Kumoricon the local Anime con, Orycon (SF) and Mewcon. I was able to keep expenses very low by staying at home and brown bagging lunch. All I need was $30.00 for fuel, dinner money for Friday and Saturday and registration fee. The best I still can be furry and do arts.

Second reason is to expand one’s fan horizons. I had a passive interest in Anime or science fiction fan. Both local Anime and Science fiction convention helped me have a greater appreciation of the respective genre weather finding new anime to watch of at a panel of a famous Author I like to read.

Finally to be a ambassador to the furry fandom. I like being a fur at any convention and contributing where I can to clear up misconceptions or just having fun like this go happy go lucky dog.. Another way was running a panel; I noted similar issues as a Greamuzzle, being an older fan in a young person fandom. The result was I ran an Otaku over 30 panel where was ably to draw from my furry experience and translate it into the Anime fandom. I expected 12 but I had 35 attendees to the panel is well received. This yea as wll as doing the Otaku over 3o panel I am looking into do an furry panel at Kumoricon and even Mewcon.
So there no excuse in moping there no convention to go, shake a tail and support your local Anime or SF convention and be furry .
Ps. I hope to see more furs at Kumoricon, Orycon and Mewcon this year

Christmas 2010

I got the tree up a little early this year because I will be head home on the 24th.
other thing in may life is I got a two moth temp job starting in January, unlike other thias one id a direct temporary position and my lead to more work. Because of a bump in unemployment, I will be able to attend mewcon , a cross genre fan convention (SF anime and a bit of furry) over the New Years Holiday in Portland Oregon. This year there will be three furry panels.

On the subject cross genres fan conventions, I want to bring up is cross genre conventions and other fan conventions that are fur friendly. Here in Northwest we have a new one call MewCon. In addition, I think Radcon in the Tri Cities WA are fur friendly and furry panels pop up at RustyCon (SF) and sakura con (anime). I see this a great opportunity for furs to look beyond the fur con to be with other furs, preset the furry fandom to other fan communities and to expand ones geek horizons beyond furry.

Kumoricon Report

The Con Kumoricon The Anime Convention
The Place: Portland Hilton Hotel

Kumoricon is the Annual Anime convention in Portland Oregon over the Labor Day weekend. This year I took my big Chococat around the convention space. Like my big Hello Kitty last year, he was a hit. During to convention I met up with few fellow furries and one fursuiter Independence  got a lot of good attention.
