Musing on Furry and the Media: News Media is not you Friend.

March has been the usual bad news month for furries.  It started with The Dependent Magazine piece on Vancoufur answering the age old stereotypical over generalized  question:

“1. They are a community who enjoy dressing up as, acting like, and celebrating anthropomorphized animals (read: animals with human characteristics).

2. It may also be a sex thing.”

Next came Adult Swim’s “Check it Out” where the much misinformed main host came out with, again usual stereotypical   “anatomically incorrect fursuit” . Finally  we have a from  New Zealand   comes “Fur fetishists ‘just nature lovers ‘”  a fine example of press bias I have seen sine the Bush 2004 elections and miss-coverage of the tea party.

What one need to know the articles I listed above are just a sampling what is out there and should be an example what wrong with the media.  There are a few areas of observation I would like to make, first how the media reports the story and furries weakness in dealing with the media and what can we do.

A lot what I have to say come from my own experiences as somebody who is an orthodox Christian, Pro Life, former Fundamentalist now reformed Christian and political volunteer. I see similar methods the reporter employs when reporting on furries to many political groups and causes I supported.  It was my study media bias in reporting of furries that eventually drawn me into the fandom.

Furry Bronies and Kitty Fans – Oh My II

For a while the media of various forms of atrocity tourisms shows Like my Strange Addiction have contacted furries for their sows. Recently they turned their eyes towards Bronies and now Hello Kitty Fans. I hope my warnings were heeded about TLC.

Not all media is bad, recently while warning about a new documentary on Hello Kitty fans, they contacted me. The person was part of the large Hello Kitty board and it seem s They got Sanrio’s blessing for the project and the company no dinky operation. Being comfortable this is legit, we traded email about the project and me. I had to clear up some misconception about furries we all do not have costumes are a fetish. The issue of furries came up because that how I became a Sanrio fan is Hello Kitty and her friends are anthropomorphic and 100% innocent. I filled out a questionnaire and will see how things progress.

Of course the sex question comes up, which raises question me how to discus this with friends and the media. All one has to do is go on FA without filters. The way I look at and wrote, one tweak doesn’t define a whole fandom. Bronies , Hello Kitty Fans and Furrsy are too big and diverse of a community to allow one tweak to define us all.
While we are on the subject, Finally about furries on Taboo. If anything this shows the Old Uncle Kage strategy of telling furries to avoid and the media trying to paternalisticly control the situation will not work. Even with Athrocon it has a limited power to control the media, the media moved somewhere else to get their story. Now with a huge fandom of hundreds of thousands of furs there no way Kage can be in all places. Then there the law of averages; with large population of furries, the media will find that one tweak. The best thing furries can do is lean how the media acts and how to get their side of the story out.

Ps. A lot of my views on the media has come form years of observation while I was a Fundaments Christian, Pro Life and sympathetic to Religious Conservative Causes from 1992 to 1998 and volunteering for Republican Candidates, petition drives and precinct person form 2004 to 2010. It was my study after CSI and other stories, noting the bias an similar treatment to conservatives that brought me into the fandom.

Orycon 33 Report

At last I present my long awaited Orycon 33 Report. My delay was due My disappointment with Orycon and Starting a new Job.

The Con: Orycon – (Writers) Science Fiction

The Place: Double Tree Lloyd’s Center

Date: 11 – 13 Nov 2011

This is my 5th Orycon. I looked d forward to this cone every year but this year I left disappointed. Dark cloud started to appeared a few week before when I check the web site when programming was posted; what  struck me there was not much I really wanted to attend and the large amount of professional writers panels but slim  picking for readers and fans.

Friday:

Because I started a new Job, I decide it would not be right to take Friday Off; after work I went down pick up my badge and attended the opening ceremonies. Next I went to Tiptoe Through the Tardis; it was part panel and part gathering of fans. I left after a while because it was a bit hokey for my taste. I did better at the fan participation of Who line is it. It was very fumy.  Afterwards I retired for the evening

First Furries Now Bronies

It looks like The media is turing their eyes on to Brony fandom; not all media attention has been good.  On Equestria Daily there new post about  Dealing with the Media PSA, a post about over our  “friends” at TLC’s Strage Adiction looking for Bronies for ther next epesode.

From our colective experiences as a Furry, trying to put the best, clean cut  well spoken repersentive will bea colossal failure.  Shock documaenty producers are not looking for the cleak cut fan but one that fits their profile. If a Brony looks too clean cut, the media will just look lower on the My Little Pony food cahin until they get the person  they want. The best thing Bronies can do is flee. Even if a clean looking Brony makes it to Strange Adiciton, the media wil twist what he or shes say to make the fandom looklike a buch of weirdos.

If any Brony is reading this post, here is a video series you may watn to watch, yes it dealling with furry fandom but the principals are the same about dealling with the media.
