RIP Rainfurrest 2007 – 2015

Rainfurrest  2007 was my first  furry convention since identifying myself as a furry in 2006. The first fury I met in person was Stalking Cat: bout are gone. I was hoping to make  a return in 2016 but that is no longer possible.

I spoke about Rainfurrest in another blog post, but I still think there are serious issues with Rainfurrest  parent organization and Rainfurrest  executive  staff . Telling was a conversation had at Orycon to a person close to the executive staff about finding  a new venue.:

The response I go from  that person was  the official line is Rainfurrest  left the Hilton because we got too big.

Me: you know the hotel will do  a background  check.

Guy:  (cuts me off ) Rainfurrest  left the Hilton because we got too big.

Ne: but

Guy:  (cuts me off ) Rainfurrest  left the Hilton because we got too big.

Any further conversation was futile. It makes me wonder was  this  delusional official line was why the Davenport Grand pulled out at the last minute?  It doesn’t matter somebody called the Hotel; Rainfurrest should had been 100%  honest with the hotel instead  trying to pull a Foxmas debacle. Furthermore, what was Rainfurrest thinking? If they could not get a Hotel from Everett to Tacoma why would they think  Spokane would be any different

It doesn’t end with Rainfurrest staff. Some try make excuses about the  picture of diaper man (the baby fur) saying he was pushed momentarily out f the room. The problem was I seen the picture. The background  is clearly  the meeting space where there are no hotel rooms.  If anything  it would be no big  issue is only furs saw that not others who were at the hotel staying at the hotel.

Right now I have to give Rainfurrest staff and executive committee a vote of no confidence for gross incompetence and allowing this problem to  fester thought the years and fail to provide integrity in leadership in recovery from  2015. I fell Rainfurrest should finish  help Furlandia then disband.

EMP Museum Outing

I went to  the  EMP mainly for Hello! Exploring the Supercute World of Hello Kitty exhibit. I had been to the  EMP  museum in the past  when it was just Music and Science Fiction Hall of Fame.  The really  renovated  the museum  taking parts of  the Science  Fiction and music Exhibits and tuned  in to  a pop culture exhibit space including Infinite Worlds of Science Fiction,  Fantasy: Worlds of Myth and Magic, Can’t Look Away: The Lure Of Horror Film and the Sea Hawks We Are 12 exhibit.  The sky Church screen stopped me in my tracks . The studio and interactive  music studio is still on the third floor.  What was supposed to be just a few hours for the Hello Kitty Exhibit turned into a all day event. Well worth the time.

My only gripe is the location of the Science Fiction Hall of fame, it should have a more dignified space.

We Are All Queer Now Redux

Recently I got  into a bit of  a scuffle with Patch o Furr at Dog Patch press   over what I perceived  was an attempt to  coopt  furry fandom into  Bay Area LGBT culture by  declaring  SF as the furry Mecca . Usually Patch does a good job bring up stories, but he has at times have San Francisco  queer culture  myopic view which come across as declaring a generalization  of  furry fandom, in my opinion. .   I am sorry Patch,  words means things. When we look a the use of  idiom of Mecca  it can be a  palace of importance  that attracts   a lot of people  or a center  of importance people look to i.e. Silicon Valley as a Mecca of the tech world. I confess   I may be reading too much to Patch’s ranting of  SF being the fury mecca . Still I objected to it  and here was his reply in another column.

“This story is dedicated to furry friend Acton, a “conservative activist” and Hello Kitty collector who gets very upset to see these events welcomed by the community. He insists that he is “100% heterosexual”, and wants you to stop making him think about a diesel driving daddy bear cuddling up to read Hello Kitty bedtime stories with him. Express yourself, hun! This dedication is brought to you by the color pink, and the word Apophasis.

Christians and the furry/punk/steampunk/Ren Faire/cosplay lifestyle My response.

In an article in Blogus  Anthony  is trying   to address can  Christians   be part of an alternative subculture such as Steam Punk, Furry Fandom and Cosplay.  As a Furry, Science fiction Fan, and Anime fan, I feel he  his heart is in the right place but ultimately  wrong.   The  article contains  many  miss-quotes of scripture  or inferring an  Indicative (proclamation why we are ) in 2 Corinthians 5:17 and infer it as an imperative (a command) or taking a narrative  verse like 1 Samuel 16:7 and trying to principal.

I believe  this person main point it this “Basically, there’s no verse against dressing up in costumes, nor are there laws against it. The issue is not necessarily the act, but how it may hinder our ability to spread the gospel and live a life that glorifies God. I”  The problem  is this person does not  give a proper scriptural bases   but defaults to legalism  by   moving the goal  post from  what  clearly God objectively calls  sin ( 1 Corinthians  6: 9-11) and applies it to  thing that are not specifically spoken in scripture. In another sense , has scruples because of is  his past punk lifestyle and tries to elevate his scruples  as a command to the Church. A problem explain in RC Sproul wonderfully lecture the Tyranny  of the Weaker Brother.

I also get the feeling  this person   does not  have knowledge  what the fandom are about, there is a vast difference between a  anti-authority  Punk and the aesthetics and literature  of the Steam Punk subculture.  At the heart of his argument is  the long  debate  between Liberty and Legalism, with respect to those than are adiaphora, that is  thing than are indifferent  were the  bible doesn’t speak.  The truth is  as being part of a subgroup  the bible does not  speak specifically of it. While we are free  to  partake of any fandom .  Yet  we are to come aside one who is weak  Roams 14 (even through Pastor Fisk  points  this does not apply as many , but in balance the weaker  brother cannot  make ones scruples  a law for the church; that would be legalism.
